Very Happy Melinda,
Alpha Lipoic Acid 100 mg 2x or take 2 in the am with some food. After I was on ALA for a few weeks I noticed that my hair was growing much faster than it was before I took it. Nutrients that promote collagen growth in the skin also promote hair and nail growth.

MSM 1000 mg, which is usually 1 tablet take 1 in the evening with dinner.
Both ALA and MSM are sulfurs, which are collagen-promoting nutrients.

Vitamin C 1000mg or more depending on your system spread dosage out over 24 hours. Not always necessary to take vit C with food. If you cannot take ascorbic acid (vit C made in the lab) then look for vit C made from Rose Hips, which is a natural form of vitamin C.

A good multi-mineral formula that contains silica, take a days full supplement divide into 2 and always take with food.

Some people need supplements of the B complex. Biotin and Pantothenic Acid B5 (B vits in the complex...check label to be sure that the biotin is in the formula) are essential to promote healthy collagen growth. Take with food.

Most supplements that promote good health will help with collagen growth.

Melinda,
Anyone who is 18 or older is a mature adult, at least biologically, when it comes to taking supplements.

Remember that the people who write up those little blurbs about products are writing to people who do not have acne and they are writing these blurbs for people who do not have any scars on their skin.

Since you are trying to get rid of scars you are in the same category as an older person who is trying to get rid of wrinkles. Both you and the older person (past 40) are trying to change something on the surface of your skin...for you it is surface scars, and for the older person it is wrinkles.

Therefore both of you are trying to encourage collagen to grow faster...you are trying to get collagen to grow faster to fill in the surface scars you want to get rid of and the older person, who is past 40, is trying to get rid of wrinkles.

I apologize to many older people who are past 40, and do not have any wrinkles because they have the oily type skin. It is people who have 'perfect' smooth dry skin that end up with all the wrinkles after they pass 40. Isn't that a sweet thing to think about...everyone who ever judged you on your oily skin and acne has to face an older age where they are a wrinkled mess.

Soooo Melinda, you have to adjust your 'thinking' to this type of mindset...you want something and how can you get it...

Basically I dont really know any info on MSM, I just feel like my best bet is to take Vitamin C for now...just to be on the safe side, because vitamin C is what I'm more familiar with, and I hear about it all the time.

Hi Melinda Very Happy ,
Yes, I think vitamin C is a good choice to start with.

When I take B-Complex I take a formula that has a lower dosage than the one that Ken is taking mainly because my system is in good shape right now, and I know I don't need such a high dose of the B's right now.

The formula I take has B1 10mg, Niacinamide 25mg, B5 100mg, Folic Acid 400mcg, Biotin 100mcg with all the other B's following in order in lower doses. If you ever take antibiotics you should consider taking a pro-biotic at the same time, and then your body's ability to manufacturer B's will not be interrupted. We know the body makes its own B12 but I am not sure how much of the other B's the body is able to manufacturer on its own...remember the post I put out on 'friendly bacteria'...well these little guys are the critters that make the B vits in the human gut as long as antibiotics have not killed them off with long term antibiotic use.

If I were you, just starting out with taking supplements, I would take the least expensive form of vitamin C.

To test the pills to see if they will actually dissolve in your stomach let one soak in a shallow glass of water and see if it does dissolve. Some vitamins have an enteric coating...this means they will not dissolve until they reach the intestine where all absorption of vitamins/nutrients takes place. If the vitamin C you choose has this coating this test will not work very well. Actually the enteric coating is a really good feature for some vitamins as long as they actually dissolve for you. I prefer to get as many of my supplements in gel caps filled with the vitamin in the form of a powder because I know that the vitamin does actually dissolve and reach my stomach. Always eat something when you take any vitamin that is in a gel cap so the food will mix with it and you will get the full benefit of the vitamin.

The exception to this rule is sublingual absorption that can take place with chemicals/vitamins on the tongue as long as the formula is prepared to do this method of absorption. An example of sublingual absorption is the new antihistamine product that is on the market where you just place the tablet on your tongue and it absorbs into your system without taking any water. The commercial for this product has been shown here in California…I don’t know if it has shown where you are located.

If you get bad stomach acid or have any other problems with the plain ascorbic acid you might consider taking Ester-C, which is a buffered form of vitamin C. If you live near a Trader Joes they have the least expensive Ester-C I have ever seen in a store ($15 for around 100 gel caps), and everything they sell is top quality. They only sell their own label in Trader Joe's.
